Bald Eagles of Alaska
November 16-21, 2009 Haines, Alaska

The largest concentration of bald eagles in the world occurs along the Chilkat River each November. Thousands of bald eagles gather at a small stretch of river referred to as the Eagle Council Ground attracted by the last chum salmon run of the year.  The Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve provides 48,000 acres for the eagles to roost, feed, and mate throughout the year but it only this time of year when the population explodes to the thousands of these magnificant birds concentrated along the riverbanks.
Your trip begins in Juneau where we will gather and take the Alaska Marine Highway ferry up to Haines. From our motel base, we will visit the Preserve each day from approx 9am - 3pm to photograph the eagles in the air, roosting on large trees, or fishing in the river. The scenery is also magnificent. (Remember, the daylight hours are short in the Alaska winter!).  Evenings will be spent reviewing the days images, critiques, and photography instruction.
This will be a real adventure for a maximum of 9 participants.  Once we are out in the field we will be out for the day.  There is not much shelter available.  The Alaskan late Fall weather is unpredictable we can have everything from single digit temperatures to the high 30's. It can snow, rain or be sunny and it can do all that it a matter of hours.  Lunch is provided and is a simple cold cuts type picnic. Dinner is on your own but we usually eat as group as at this time of year there is only  or 2 restaurants open in Haines.
